Pharmacy and Prescription-Only Medicine Guidelines

Advertisements for online pharmacies are restricted based on applicable laws. To be fair to all of our pharmacy advertisers, we make no exceptions.

Microsoft and Yahoo! require advertisers who sell or facilitate the sale of prescription drugs online to have up-to-date certification in the markets to which they advertise. Drug manufacturers are not required to have certification to advertise, as long as they do not sell their prescription drugs online.

Different guidelines or restrictions might apply to websites in countries or regions other than the United States and Canada.

United States

  • Online pharmacies (including pet pharmacies) that advertise prescription drugs to customers in the United States must be accredited by the National Association Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites (VIPPS) program or Vet-VIPPS program.
  • Ads that market to customers outside the U.S. and U.S. territories are not allowed.

For more information, please see the following NABP websites:

Canada

  • Online pharmacies (including pet pharmacies) that advertise prescription drugs to customers in Canada must be accredited by the Canadian International Pharmacy Association (CIPA).
  • Ads that market to any customers outside of Canada are not allowed.
