The field of in-game advertising is garnering legitimate interest, as reported in the June 9, 2008, Seattle Times article “In-game ads tend to leave their mark”. The article recounts the two-year relationship Microsoft has had with Massive, noting its success with a recent Adidas advertising campaign.
Massive’s recent Adidas campaign included ad placement in the game “Major League Baseball 2K7.” As quoted in the Seattle Times, the campaign led to a 90-percent increase in recall rate for the Adidas slogan “Impossible Is Nothing.” Also mentioned, gamers who agreed with the statements “Adidas is the only brand for me” and “Adidas is an inspirational brand” increased 70 percent.
The success with Adidas bodes well for Massive, as in-game advertising has a great deal of growth potential. Citing Nielson Media Research, The Seattle Times states that in-game ads will reach $1 billion by 2010.
